On July 26, 2014, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) in West Bengal held its 60th Convocation and conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award on Krishen Mehta.

Mr. Mehta has been a friend and supporter of Carnegie Council for many years and is a member of the Andrew Carnegie Society.

He is a co-chair of the advisory board of Global Financial Integrity; a member of the advisory board of Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program; a Senior Global Justice Fellow at Yale University; a senior advisor of the Tax Justice Network; and a member of the Asia Advisory Council for Human Rights Watch.

Founded in 1951, IIT Kharagpur was the first engineering Institute opened after India's Independence. It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India. The Institute was built on the site of Hijli Detention Camp, where many political prisoners were held during British rule. Several of the original Camp buildings are now a museum.
