The Carnegie Council will send a delegation to Beijing this month to confer with prominent Chinese academics, policymakers, think tank scholars, and businesspeople on issues of ethics and climate change.
"The overall goal of the trip is to create a global dialogue on ethics," said delegation coordinator Devin Stewart of the Carnegie Council. "Our objectives are two-fold: First, to lay the groundwork for a track-two dialogue between China, Japan, and the United States in order to foster cooperation on climate change and energy; and second, to explore US-Japan-China university faculty development on ethics in international affairs."
Mr. Stewart is Director of Global Policy Innovations at Carnegie Council. Other Council delegates include Joshua Eisenman of UCLA and a Fellow for Asia Studies at the American Foreign Policy Council; Jonathan Gage, a Carnegie Council trustee, a principal of Booz & Company, and publisher of its magazine, strategy+business; Harry Harding, University Professor of International Affairs at the George Washington University; and Alex Westlake, managing director of ClearWorld Energy (based in Beijing).
Stewart and Eisenman are coordinating the itinerary with the China Reform Forum in Beijing. Institutions to be visited include Peking University, Renmin University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, as well as the China Reform Forum. The trip was made possible by generous support from ClearWorld Energy.
"This delegation has the potential to establish important long-term relationships," said Carnegie Council President Joel Rosenthal. "Its mission ties in with our concern with applied ethics in issues such as energy cooperation, our long-standing commitment to faculty and curriculum development, and also with our new Ethics Studio network that will feature partners around the world."
The Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, established in 1914 by Andrew Carnegie, is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing understanding of the relationship between ethics and international affairs. The Council's mission is to be the voice for ethics in international policy. It convenes agenda-setting forums and creates educational opportunities and information resources for a worldwide audience of teachers and students, journalists, international affairs professionals, and concerned citizens.
